About Matthew

Admitted to practice in 2018, Matthew has built a deep and diverse litigation and dispute resolution practice, advising across jurisdictions and practice areas. He has worked in both rural and metropolitan settings, and assists the firm’s directors across the property, planning, hospitality, and litigation practice areas.

Matthew has acted for a wide range of clients, including companies, directors, builders, landowners, high net-worth individuals, developers, SMEs, multinational corporations, and ASX-listed entities. He has advised in matters before the Magistrates’ Court, County Court, Supreme Court, VCAT, and the Federal Court of Australia.

Matthew has advised and represented clients in matters involving:

  • property law disputes – including acting for a vendor in a repudiation dispute arising from a contract of sale of real estate, and a professional negligence claim against the vendor’s former solicitor.
  • commercial contract disputes – including a significant misleading and deceptive conduct claim brought against a multinational corporation.
  • corporations and insolvency disputes – including setting aside statutory demands, liquidation, bankruptcy, shareholder oppression, and director disputes.
  • building and construction disputes – including bringing an indemnity costs application under section 109(2) of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal Act 1998 (Vic) on behalf of a builder.
  • defamation disputes – including acting for a luxury car dealership in proceedings arising from a purchaser’s statements alleged to be defamatory.
  • tortious conduct and negligence disputes – including successfully defending a summary judgment application brought by a government body.
  • planning and environment disputes – including acting for a significant wholesale business in an ancillary-use dispute with a metropolitan council.
  • regulatory compliance disputes – including defending and responding to show-cause notices issued by government authorities and advising on internal review applications.

In addition to his legal qualifications, Matthew completed a Certificate IV and Diploma of Building and Construction at the Trade Institute of Victoria. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy and Politics) and Diploma of Liberal Arts (Philosophy), which complement his structured and analytical reasoning in complex disputes.

With a strong background in town planning, he holds a Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning (High Distinction) and was selected as the sole representative of his Master’s cohort for the Planning Institute of Australia’s quinquennial re-accreditation process.

Matthew also holds specialist accreditation from the Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association (ARITA), having completed the Advanced Certificate in Insolvency & Restructuring and Turnaround. He was recognised as a Highest Achiever Nationally, placing equal first in Australia in Advanced Restructuring and Turnaround. He further holds a Graduate Certificate in Restructuring and Turnaround from the University of Technology Sydney.
